DIRECTORS’ NOTES
When I 昀椀rst read the script of Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl, I immediately
knew the community needed a show like this, and I was honored to be
given the chance to make this story come to life. To quote my son, Sean,
"The music I make is like the conversa}on no one wants to have." And
that is what this show is: a conversa}on we do not too o昀琀en have. Love
and loss and the choices we make about le琀ng go or choosing to stay.

for Eurydice, and will stop at nothing to 昀椀nd a way to be with her. In the
Underworld, Eurydice is met by her long-lost father. But she does not
recognize him. For in the Underworld, you are not human. You are like
that of a stone: no language, no emo}on, no memory or self-iden}ty.
But the love of a father knows no bounds. He found a way to remember,
to read and write, and helped Eurydice remember who she was: who he
was to her. But this came at the cost of remembering Orpheus too, now
that her memory is restored. Eurydice is faced with a choice: stay with
her father, or go back to Orpheus.
One ques}on I ask myself daily is "What choices bring me peace?" This
is the struggle Eurydice faces throughout this play. What would you do if
you had the chance to spend a day with someone you've lost? Would
you stay, or would you go? At the very start of this produc}on, I sat the
cast down and we played some games and had a good laugh, but then
we had that conversa}on that no one wants to have: Who have you
lost, and how has that a昀昀ected your journey? How do you connect to
this show? Being vulnerable is not easy for everyone. This show has
brought out that vulnerability and discomfort in facing the grief and joy
that comes with love and loss. All of the music throughout the show has
come from the cast and crew. All of the pictures and items across the
set come from the cast and crew. Why? Because no ma琀琀er the journey
we've had up un}l today, we are here because of those people we leave
behind and even those s}ll with us. Those memories have shaped us.
And so I asked the cast and crew to share that vulnerability with the
world.

My hope for the audience is that they take away a piece of joy and courage to let themselves be vulnerable and feel the grief of love, loss, and
le琀ng go. But to also have the courage to give themselves grace for the
choices made along the way. Find what gives you peace. And don't forget those who have go琀琀en you here today. Who is your "I do this for"?
